Dr Manuela Terrinoni, PhD
University of Gothenburg, Sweden
Dr Manuela Terrinoni is a Pharmaceutical Biotechnologist with a Ph.D. in immunology and microbiology and over a decade of experience in biotechnology, microbiology, and immunology. Her career has been defined by impactful contributions to vaccine research and development, particularly targeting enteric diseases affecting low- and middle-income countries.
She contributed to in the development and technology transfer of Hillchol, a novel single-strain oral cholera vaccine (OCV), which successfully completed clinical phases I–III and was licensed in India in August 2024. As of 2024, Dr. Terrinoni serves as the Principal Investigator for the DuoChol Cholera Vaccine Project at the University of Gothenburg. In this role, she has led together with Prof. Jan Holmgren the development and technology transfer for GMP manufacturing and toxicity testing of DuoChol, a next-generation thermostable dry formulation oral cholera vaccine scheduled for Phase I clinical testing in September 2025.
Dr. Terrinoni’ s expertise includes genetic vaccine engineering, protein expression and purification, immunological assay development across pre-clinical and clinical phases, and a deep understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind vaccine antigens and protein-based adjuvants. Her research focuses on vaccine innovation against Vibrio cholerae, ETEC, and Shigella—key contributors to global enteric disease burden.
